Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream with Wildflower Honey

While ice cream is beloved around the world, it’s inarguably most enjoyed by Americans. After all, the average American consumes a whopping 48 pints per year! This is not surprising given that in the U.S. ice cream and the consumption of “cold cream” is closely intertwined with our history as a country. I guess you could say we inherited our sweet tooth from our founding fathers.

President James Madison, Ben Franklin, President George Washington, and President Thomas Jefferson all had a certain ardor for ice cream. During the Constitutional Convention of 1787, Ben Franklin, seeking to cool tensions, created “crème froid” and served it to flustered delegates. One President George Washington was in attendance and couldn’t get enough of the sweet treat. Consequently, President George Washington later purchased an ice cream machine and according to records from Catham Street, New York, in the summer of 1790, he spent approximately $200 on ice cream alone! A delectable strawberry ice cream was also served at President James Madison’s Inaugural Ball in 1813. Later, in 1921, Lady Liberty greeted weary immigrants with Ice Cream sandwiches giving new Americans their first taste of liberty.

During World War 2 Ice Cream was further solidified as a quintessential dessert in our homes. In an effort to boost morale ice cream was served to troops in every branch of the military. The Navy truly rocked the boat with a floating ice cream parlor constructed for sailors in 1945! At the end of the war, dairy was no longer rationed, and America celebrated with ice cream. In fact, in 1946, over 20 quarts of ice cream were consumed per person!

The love didn’t fizzle out, commercial production of ice cream boomed and beloved brands like Baskin Robbins and Ben & Jerry’s were born soon after. To celebrate our love of Ice Cream, in 1984 President Ronald Regan dedicated the entire month of July as National Ice Cream month and declared every 3rd Sunday to be National Ice Cream Day! So now, you can celebrate this sweet holiday month–and honor our 4th President James Madison, with this recipe for Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream.
